11 Movies Like Freaky: Dark Comedies from Scary to Funny

Dark comedy isn’t for everyone, but I sure like it. I just got fresh off watching Freaky and started to wonder similar films I could watch.

Freaky meshes all of my favorite film features into one fun little bow, and there are a few other films that do that too.

If you want to laugh and scream during this week’s movie night, here are my favorite movies like Freaky you should check out:

What is Freaky?

I LOVE a good dark comedy, and Freaky definitely fits the bill. This body-swap horror flick features Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton as a serial killer and high school student (respectively). In a classic body change trope, Millie Kessler (Newton) ends up in the body of serial killer, the Blissfield Butcher (Vaughn).

This film is a classic scream-style slasher film filled with elegant gore – that is lots of blood and guts but done in an artistic style. If you want a little gore and a dash of fright mixed in with a comical story, this is the flick for you. Haven’t seen it? Watch it this weekend!

Best movies like Freaky

1. Beetlejuice (1988)

Beetlejuice is my favorite Halloween movies. It’s more fun then scary, but there are a few jumps.

When a freshly-dead couple, Adam (Alec Baldwin) and Barbara (Geena Davis), can’t scare away the new family that lives in their home, they seek the help of a specialist, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton).

Unfortunately, he’s not exactly on the same page as the couple and has a few ideas of his own. If you have never seen this film you NEED to.

2. Jennifer’s Body (2009)

After being sacrificed to the devil, Jennifer (Megan Fox) turns into a succubus.

Now insatiable, she turns a hungry eye on boys who never stood a chance with her before. Her friend Anita (Amanda Seyfried) figures out something is going on, and sets out to end the carnage.

Jennifer’s Body is a hilarious take on the typical zombie genre featuring a hot chick devouring horny boys in a less-than-sexy way.

3. The Babysitter (2017)

In The Babysitter, Cole (Judah Lewis) stays up past his bedtime and realizes that his hot babysitter belongs to a satanic cult, and they need to keep him quiet.

They’re determined to use him as a sacrifice and he must find a way to escape before it’s too late. This gory horror flick has a comedic air to it, and is one of the more underrated films in recent years.

4. Scream (1996)

Who doesn’t love a classic film? There’s a new Scream being released this year, but before you grab your tickets, it’s time to revisit the original. Wes Craven’s 1996 classic redefined the slasher genre, and is just as relevant today as it was then.

In Scream, a masked killer begins stalking and murdering teenagers in the fictional town of Woodsboro. Sidney Prescott is targeted by the killer, but with the of her friends, she tries to stay alive and solve the mystery of the killer’s identity.

5. Happy Death Day (2017)

In Happy Death Day college student, Tree, must relive the day of her murder over and over again. This unfortunate death loop will only end when she discovers her killer’s identity.

But as she investigates her own murder, she must outwit the person who is trying to kill her, and avoid making the same mistakes that led to her death. With time running out, Tree must solve the mystery of her death before she winds up dead for good.

6. Clue (1985)

Clue is not scary but it does fit the dark comedy genre.

When 6 guests who don’t know each other are invited to a strange dinner party and their host is killed, they must team up to discover the killer amongst them.

This movie features A LOT of ’80s cheese, but if you can stand it, I would highly recommend watching it. I have a laugh every time I do.

7. What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

When Taika Waititi is involved in a project, it’s bound to be hilarious. What We Do In The Shadows is no exception.

This hilarious take on the modern-day vampire follows Viago (Taika Waititi) , Deacon (Jonny Brugh), and Vladislav (Jemaine Clement) who are just trying to live normal lives.

This goofy take on the lives of vampires is must-see for anyone wanting a laugh.

8. Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Shaun of the Dead is a dark comedy classic that most who appreciate the genre love.

It follows the story of Shaun, a boring electronic salesman, and his slacker roommate, who’s lives are disrupted by the zombie apocalypse.

Featuring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this film is full of humor and gore, making it a must-see for fans of the zombie genre.

9. The Addams Family (1991)

I’m a massive fan of The Addams Family. This 1991 dark comedy features some of the strangest and most eccentric characters in film.

Wealthy, ghoulish, and strange, the Addams Family is forced to move out of their beloved home with Gomez Addams (long believed to be dead) shows up and tries to claim an inheritance.

This film is odd to say the least, but it’s also darkly hilarious and full of great one-liners. If you’re looking for something different, give The Addams Family a try.

10. Heathers (1988)

Heathers is a dark and cynical movie that really hasn’t aged well, but it does fall into the dark “comedy” genre. It really opened doors for movies like The Babysitter and Jennifer’s Body to be made, flipping the teen horror genre on its head.

This film tells the story of Veronica Sawyer (Winona Ryder), who is part of a group of girls called the Heathers. She grows tired of their mean-spirited ways and falls in with a new boy, J.D. (Christian Slater). Things quickly spiral out of control, leading to some darkly humorous (and gory) moments.

11. The Final Girls (2015)

The Final Girls mixes Jumanji with the classic horror genre. When Max and her friends are watching a scary film, they accidentally get transported into it. They have no way out except to make it through the movie so they can return to reality.

If you want to mix a bit of horror with something that’s fun and entertaining, and you’re always screaming “don’t open the door” – this is the film for you. This is one of those great movies like Freaky that I like to enjoy on a Friday night.

Final Thoughts: Movies Like Freaky

I HIGHLY recommend watching Freaky if you love a good dark humor. But if you’ve already watched this hilariously gory film, there are plenty of movies like Freaky you can watch.

Beetlejuice is my absolute favorite dark comedy of pretty much all time. Thankfully, it’s not a super gory film, nor is it scary so everyone can really watch it. If you want something that’s a little more horror-focused, I recommend either The Babysitter (available on Netflix) or Jennifer’s Body.

The other funny movie I recommend is Happy Death Day – but however you look, there are plenty of movies like Freaky out there.
